Winter camping is a favorite among Boy Scout troops in the Long Cane District.  As seen here, Troop 62 of Abbeville County, under the leadership of long-time Scoutmaster Ed Patton; took a hike to the top of Old Indian at an elevation of 2,237 feet above sea level.  Like many winter outings, this trip to Camp Old Indian required the Scouts to endure the bitter cold and freezing rain during the weekend outing!  Ahhh  --- Scouting at its best!

In a candle-lighting ceremony highlighting the 12 points of the Scout Law, John Burnett was honored for receiving the Eagle Scout Rank, the highest rank in Boy Scouts. John is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Sam Burnett and a member of Troop 313 chartered by North Side Baptist Church. The ceremony was held on August 15 at Greenwood Presbyterian Church where John and his family are members. The Reverend Archie Moore gave the invocation and benediction. Marty Manley, former Scoutmaster of Troop 313, spoke of John’s twelve year involvement in Scouting, joining in first grade as a Tiger Cub. John received the Arrow of Light, Cub Scouting highest award, and crossed over into Boy Scouts in fifth grade. “It is a small percentage of boys that earn Eagle Scout, but even more rare for a boy to go all the way through beginning as a Tiger Cub,” Manley said. The current Scoutmaster, Karen Buchanan, spoke of John’s later years in Scouting and his service to his Troop as Senior Patrol Leader. “John set the standard of leadership in our Troop,” she said, “the boys look up to him and have followed his example.” After becoming a Life Scout, John served for one year as Senior Patrol Leader. Troop 313 has a very active outdoor program, but John was looking for more adventure. Under his leadership, the boys enjoyed more challenging backpacking trips, snow skiing, and spelunking. Kim Burnett, John’s mother, presented John with his Eagle Scout medal. John then pinned his parents with the Mother and Father pins. Several members of the audience who are Eagle Scouts stood as Eagle Scout, Eric Buchanan, administered the Eagle Charge and Oath. After receiving his award, John thanked his parents and family, Troop leaders, and fellow Scouts for their support during his journey in Scouting. The morning after his ceremony, John moved to attend college at the University of South Carolina.
