Camping opportunities for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cub Scout Packs, and Boy Scout Troops in the Long Cane District of the Blue Ridge Council, BSA.

How can Scouting capture the interest of your boys and young adults? Through diverse high-adventure and outdoor opportunities. Scouting emphasizes values through ideals that reinforce God, country, and personal growth as expressed in high-adventure and outdoor experiences.

You cannot take the “OUTING” out of “SCOUTING.” In fact most boys join and stay in Scouts so that they can go on adventures. On campouts boys learn skills like cooking, hiking, and orienteering, but also life skills like teamwork, self-reliance, and leadership. Most troops have an  objective to maintain an active and varied outdoor program that has an outing at least 10 times per year. Each summer the troop will plan all of its outings for the entire year and put it on a calendar that gets distributed to Scouts and parents. Scouts will remember the outings; they will not remember the Troop Meetings. Please note that Scout must be registered as a Scout and have turned in the BSA Medical Form and the Medical Release for Emergency Care before he can be allowed to go on a troop outing.

Monthly Campouts generally begin around 5:00 p.m. on Friday and last until around noon on Sunday. These events will vary greatly from District or Council Camporees (multi-troop events), backpacking trips, mountain biking trips, snow skiing, canoeing, whitewater rafting, or advancement/training activities. The cost of the trip depends on the activity, but a campout typically costs around $20. In order to go on a campout a Scout must complete his commitment form and turn it in with the money by the date listed on the commitment form. The troop leadership need to know up-front who is going so they can plan for drivers, admission, and food.

Summer Camp lasts one entire week in either the month of June or July. Our council’s summer camp is Camp Old Indian, near Traveler's Rest, South Carolina.  Camp Old Indian (COI) is the Blue Ridge Council's official Scouting reservation.  The Blue Ridge Council is located in the upstate of South Carolina.

High Adventure trips are usually a boy’s most fulfilling experience in Scouting. These trips could be 10 days of hiking in Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico or the Appalachian Trial, or a week of sailing a ship in the Caribbean Sea, or an extended period of canoeing on lakes and rivers near Canada. These are only examples of what is possible in Scouting. To go on a High Adventure trip, the Scout must be First Class rank and will need to meet an age requirement depending on where we go. These trips cost around $1,000 and are usually planned 2 years or more in advance. This allows enough time to participate in fundraisers to offset the large cost.

LONG CANE DISTRICT CAMPOREES COUNCIL EXPOREES / CAMPOREES

Camporees are a time of fun, relaxation, and fellowship for both Scouts and Leaders alike.  Each and every year, the Long Cane District, of the Blue Ridge Council hosts two camporees (one in the fall and one during the Spring --- if the Blue Ridge Council does NOT have a Camporee/Exporee planned).

The twice-annual Scouting encampment allows troops to hone their Scouting skills and compete against one another in friendly competition!

Council Camporees and Exporees are held every two years in the Blue Ridge Council.  The next Exporee is slated for the Spring of 2010, the centennial of the founding of the Boy Scouting movement in the United States of America.

Born in 1938 as Philturn Rockymountain Scoutcamp, today's Philmont Scout Ranch is a bustling center for high adventure and training. Youth and adults take advantage of the ranch's camping, training, and work programs. Most activity takes place during the summer, but Philmont also offers its Fall Adventure and Kanik winter program.

More than 860,000 Scouts, Venturers, and leaders have experienced the adventure of Philmont since the first camping season in 1939. Throughout its existence, conscientious attention to low-impact camping techniques have helped maintain the ranch's wilderness flavor.

The area surrounding the ranch is rich with history, from the Native Americans who made this arid land their home to the land barons of the 19th century. The town of Cimarron boasts a number of historical buildings, including the St. James Hotel—site of at least 26 killings during Cimarron's wilder days.
