District Programs & Events

DISTRICT MEETING TIMES CHANGED

Meetings of the District Committee and the District Commissioner's Staff (Assistant District Commissioners, Cub Scout/Boy Scout Roundtable Commissioner, and Unit Commissioners) have changed effective immediately.  Previously, the District Commissioner's Staff met first, followed by the District Committee meeting.

 

The District Committee will meet at 6:00pm, followed by the District Commissioner's Staff meeting at 7:00 pm.  This will allow for a more effective means of communication between the District Commissioner's Staff and the District Committee.  For additional information, feel free to contact District Chairman Isaac Shaffer at 227-0002, ext. 3 or District Commissioner Gary Stratton at 223-2013.

 

SCOUTING FOR FOOD

Scouting For Food is an annual Community Service Project by the Boy Scouts of America.  Here, in the Long Cane District, we collect donated items on the first and second Saturdays during the month of February (although units are permitted to collect food anytime of the year).  When you wish to take the collected non-perishable food items to the Food Bank of Greenwood County, please contact James Murphy, Executive Director, at 980-5987 or email him at grnwdfoodbank1@nctv.comLet them know when (Date and Time) your group will be arriving at their new facilities on Creswell Avenue.

January 16, 2010 Blue Ridge Council Pow-Wow - 'MUST HAVE' Training

Training for all Cub Scouting Leaders (Assistant Den Leaders, Assistant Webelos Den Leaders, Den Leaders, Tiger Den Leaders, Webelos Den Leaders, Assistant Cubmasters, Cubmasters, Pack Trainer, Committee Chair and Committee Members).  Pre-Registration is REQUIRED.  Course selection on a first come-first serve basis.  $25 registration fee includes course materials, notebook, handouts, limited-edition POW-WOW patch (must stay all day to get the patch), and lunch.  Lunch will be a BLUE AND GOLD dinner!  For additional information, please visit the Blue Ridge Council's official website at http://www.blueridgecouncil.org YOU WILL HAVE MORE FUN THAN HUMANS SHOULD LEGALLY BE ALLOWED TO HAVE!

Martin Luther King Holiday.  The Blue Ridge Council Service Center and National Scout Shop will be closed to observe this national holiday.  Both the Service Center and Scout Shop will re-open on Tuesday, January 19th.

 
 January 23, 2010 Boy Scout Leader Specific Training  (Indoor Session) 

One-day training.  Training conducted at the Blue Ridge Council Service Center in Mauldin, SC..  Specifically designed for Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, and Troop Committee members..  Required training for all Troop Leadership. $7 registration fee, which includes materials.  Registration is at 8:30 am and training begins at 9:00 am.  Training for scoutmasters and their assistants will run 9:00am-4:30pm.  Training for troop committee members (and Committee Chair) will run 9:00am-12:30pm.

 Please come prepared with notebook, Boy Scout handbook, pen and paper, and bag lunch.  There is a drink machine at the Council Service Center for those interested in getting something to drink.  For additional information, please download the flyer at

February 11, 2010 Blue Ridge Council Annual Awards Banquet

The Blue Ridge Council takes time to honor the dedication of several of the Scouting volunteers in the council who have "gone beyond their duties and responsibilities of their positions" to help "Make A Difference ..." in the lives of the youth in our communities, of the upstate of South Carolina.  The prestigious SILVER BEAVER award for distinguished service to youth on the council-level will be presented at the annual Awards Banquet.

Weekend training.  Training conducted at the Blue Ridge Council's Summer camp facility in Travelers' Rest --- Camp Old Indian..  Specifically designed for Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, and Troop Committee members..  Required training for all Troop Leadership. April 17, 2010 WEBELOS Training

One-day training.  Training for Webelos Den Leaders and Assistant Webelos Den Leaders (Webelos Outdoor Leader Training, or Outdoor Webelos Leader --- OWL --- training) will be conducted at the Blue Ridge Council's Summer Camp facility near Travelers' Rest, South Carolina --- Camp Old Indian.  Pre-Registration is requested and the fee is $15, which includes materials, notebook, handouts, and snack foods.  The program will be conducted outdoors, so please dress appropriately for the expected weather conditions in the mountains of South Carolina.. April 23 - 25, 2010 Order of the Arrow  (Dixie Fellowship)

Order of the Arrow's annual Conclave meeting (Dixie Fellowship) will be hosted by our Lodge,  Atta Kulla Kulla #185 at the Blue Ridge Council's Summer Camp facility near Travelers' Rest, South Carolina --- Camp Old Indian during the weekend of April 23rd, 24th, and 25th PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.  Visit the Council Service Center in person to register for this wonderful event.  In order to be a Dixie Fellowship delegate, AKK Lodge #185 requires that each Arrowman have their dues paid up, be registered as a member of the Boy Scouts of America, and have attended either the Fall 2009 or Spring 2010 Spring Fellowship.

 
May 8, 2010 Order of the Arrow

Atta Kulla Kulla Lodge #185 Workday.  A day when Arrowmen from all across the Council come to Camp Old Indian to help make improvements to the property.  This one-day event is free for attending and lunch will be provided.  Each participant is asked to bring gloves and a shovel with them to camp.  The Order of the Arrow is all about "CHEERFUL SERVICE TO OTHERS."

The 2010 Piedmont-Appalachian College of Commissioner Science will be held once again, at the Ridgecrest Conference Center in Black Mountain, North Carolina.  The Cost for the weekend is still only $100 per participant for the full weekend of events.  January 14, 2010 Annual Adult Leader Recognition and Awards Banquet

January Roundtable meeting and annual Adult Leader Recognition and Awards Banquet.  Social Hall, Main Street United Methodist Church.  Banquet begins at 6:30 pm and should be over by 9:00 pm.  Covered-dish dinner.  The District will supply cups, ice, plates, bowls, napkins, and flatware. We are requesting that each family bring a covered-dish (meat or vegetable entree and/or dessert) to the Awards Banquet (enough to feed a group of 12 people). 

 

We are cordially inviting all "Class of 2009" Eagle Scouts to be present so that they may be recognized.  Also, if any Scout or Leader either earned or received a Religious Award during 2009 to be at the Awards Banquet to be recognized for their efforts.  If you have received the District Award of Merit, Silver Beaver, or Woodbadge in the past; we want you there!  Please come and have an enjoyable evening of fantastic food, fun, and fellowship! Let's give these deserving individuals a rousing "atta-boy" for all their hard work to help make the Long Cane District the G-R-E-A-T district it has become!

Boy Scouts 100 year Centennial Encampment at Lander University.  A mid-way is planned with live music from a US Military Band to perform Saturday evening.
